The island of La Maddalena sits back on a stunning bay in the uninhabited archipelago which bears its name 15 minutes boat trip from Palau, on Sardinia’s north coast.
Well known for its historical connections with two of the world’s most famous warriors, Napoleon Bonaparte and Horatio Nelson, who discovered its beauty and perfect location centuries ago.

La Maddalena’s centre of summer activity is via Garibaldi which runs from the Piazza Garibaldi just behind the quayside, the notorious Italian passeggiata take place here, through the alleyway where a fine view of sparkling water and white yachts catch your eyes.
The fishing harbour is around the corner from the ferry terminus, at Cala Gavetta, as it is the busy Piazza P. Tommaso which fronts on to it, in the past that was the main port facing the original nucleus of the town, now excursions to the nearby islands (Spargi and Budelli) depart from here daily, and also buses for Caprera Island, which is linked by a causeway.
Via Amendola along the seaside in between the Port and Cala Gavetta can go proud of a few buildings dated back to the 18th century, glorious time for the small island.
From La Madonnetta to Cala Lunga the unbelievably lovely setting all around the island’s beaches makes this place an ideal swimming spot, with a riverbed ranging in colour from pink to yellow in spring and turquoise blue of wonderful water in summer.
The beaches of the northern and eastern coasts are the most fascinating within easy reach from the panoramic road winding around the island, moving west is still heaven.

Places to see

Nino Lambroglia Naval Museum

Follow the sign to Spalmatore beach on the panoramic road, the Museum is situated about 1km from the town in a place called Mongiardino.
The museum houses findings from the nearby coast including the spectacular remains of the cargo of a roman galley that sank off the island of Spargi about 120 BC, including decorative jewellery and relics of domestic objects etc.

Situated in via Ilva in the town centre is an elegant parish church built in 1779 with a beautiful interior that proudly displays on the left after the entrance, the candlesticks and the crucifix donated by Horatio Nelson during his stay in the island between 1803 and 1805.
The church as we see today was rebuilt in 1814 following the French bombardment of 1793.
On the 23 of February 1793 the church was bombarded by Napoleon’s fleet, the roof was seriously damaged frightening the population who took refuge there, one of the bullet exploded at the feet of the Statue of S.Maria Maddalena, miraculously missing it.
Today a few of these cannonballs are on display in the city’s town hall.

A pretty sandy beach sheltered from all winds in its rocky shallow bay.
Situated east of town, with its collection of bars, restaurants and discos is ideal for youngster in search of some night fun.

 

Along the panoramic road just passed the Museum Nino Lambroglia, wind down through the isthmus that connects to La Maddalena you’ll discover on a rocky setting few stunning bays surrounded by cystus and juniper bushes.

6km from Spalmatore beach The small village resort of Port Massimo sits back over the Cala Lunga Bay on the east coast guarantying superb view over the spectacular setting of Caprera Island.

Punta Marginetto

Northwest of town the red collar of rocks intensifies the contrast of Mediterranean dark green vegetation and a crystalline blue sea creating a fine spot to enjoy an amazing vista over the islands of Barettni and Barettinelli.

Bassa Trinita’ Beach

Also knwon as Cala Maiore this beautiful corner of the island is situated north-east of town, within easy reach from the panoramic road.
The picturesque 17th century church of Santa Trinita’ nearby is the oldest church in La Maddalena.

Punta Tegge

Only 2km off town, it is the closest swimming site and the ideal night life place for young people.
Guarded by the military fort it quickly opens up into an irresistibly dazzling little beach.
